East Side Gallery

Paying a visit to Berlin and not viewing the East Side Gallery is perhaps the biggest blunder that a tourist can make. Check out the 1.3 kilometers long portion of the Berlin Wall and view the 100 odd paintings on the same.

Artists from all over the world have contributed their bit to these paintings. There is no question that this is one of the largest open air gallery in the world and also one of the longest lasting. These paintings depict a hope for a free and better future for individuals from all corners of the globe.

Some of the famous artists whose work adorns this wall include Ingeborg Blumenthal, Herve Morlay, Bodo Sperling, Jurgen Grosse, Dimitri Vrubel, and many others. The successful merger of BBK and VBK, two different associations of German artists, led to the foundation of the East Side Gallery.

It is painful to see that quite a few of these great works of art have been mutilated due to vandalism, graffiti work, and erosion. However, a non-profit organization has taken up the task of restoring back the East Side Gallery to its pristine glory. This is a must visit for those who love art associated with the history of the Berlin Wall.
