Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Do not miss out on the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church when you next visit . This is one of the most known attractions of the city. Originally constructed by the famous architect Franz Schwechten between the years 1891 to 1895, this church serves as a memorial to Wilhelm I. Located in Breitscheidplatz, this iconic building suffered slight damages due to a bombing raid in the year 1943.

There were several plans to reconstruct the church after the end of the war, but after several discussions, it was decided to leave the structure as it was, to serve as a memorial of the war, and build another new church around it.

The famous architect, Egon Eiermann, was commissioned for the construction of the new structure. The consecration of the new church took place in the year 1962. You should check out the worship room and the hexagonal tower.

Check out the cross… it is made out of nails that have been taken from the old Coventry cathedral. Those in the know will tell you that a 1/10 scaled down model of the church can be viewed in Wernigerode town.
