Zwinger Palace

Vacationers in Dresden who are fans of classic German baroque architecture must take the time to visit the Zwinger Palace!

This landmark of exceptional design and aesthetics was designed by Matthaus Daniel Poppelman.  It was constructed in various stages over an 18 year period spanning 1710 to 1718.  When the electorial prince Frederick August got married to the Archduchess Maria Josepha who was daughter of the Habsburg emperor the palace became officially inaugurated.

As with many such spectacular structures, the original palace was the target of massive bombing during WWII.  The Allied forces almost destroyed the palace but somehow a good part of the structure survived and the citizens got together to rebuild the palace.

Louis XIV originally initiated the building of the palace and one can feel the enthusiasm of the old king in the reconstruction that stands today even after the furors of war almost consumed it.
