Hanover

Situated by the Leine River, Hanover was once the family seat of the Hanoverian kings of Great Britain. It is one of the major centers of north Germany and is famous all over the world for its various trade fairs like the CeBIT and the Hanover Fair. Apart from this, this city is also famous for hosting the largest Marksmen’s Fun Fair of the world.

Hosting all these fairs and exhibitions prove no problem because the Hanover fair ground, which also hosted the Expo 2000, is the largest of its kind in the world. Constructed by G.L. Laves between the years 1845-1882, the Hanover Opera House is a famous tourist spot and is a classical example of neo-classical architecture.

Do not forget to check the exquisite Herrenhausen Gardens. Located close to it is the Georgengarten, a magnificent British style park. Also in close proximity is the Wilhelm Busch Museum that is famous worldwide for its Heinrich Zille collection, along with manuscripts, letters, drawings, and paintings. On the right side of the Herrenhausen Gardens lies the Berggarten, a botanical garden that is renowned for its cactus houses and orchids.

A mausoleum, constructed by G.L. Laves lies at the northern side and contains tombs of various Guleph princes inclusive of that of George I of Britain. Those interested in art should check out the marble figures sculpted by C.D. Rauch.

If you are interested in ancient artifacts, then you should visit the famous Kestner Museum that showcases decorative and applied art along with antiquities that include an important Egyptian collection.
