Kempinski Hotel Atlantic Hamburg

The people of Hamburg affectionately refer to this riverfront hotel as the “white castle on the Alster.” Opened in 1909 as a luxury hotel for ocean-liner passengers, the Kempinski has a creamy-white, gabled exterior. The baronial marble lobby, renovated in 2003, features a lofty ceiling, glittering chandeliers, oil paintings, antiques, the original fireplace, and a curved grand staircase. Guests include international celebrities, businesspeople, political leaders, and vacationers. (Scenes from the movie Tomorrow Never Dies were filmed at this hotel.)

Atlantic Restaurant – Creative international cuisine is presented in the ambience of a turn-of-the-century ocean liner. Wood wainscoting, marble tables and floors, chandeliers, oil paintings, and floral arrangements in the central rotunda complement maritime features, such as the low window with panoramic river view. Menu highlights include Atlantic Lobster Soup with Sugar Peas, Venison with Scallops and Winter Truffles, and a large selection of wines and cheeses. Gourmet “fast foods” include the Kebab Deluxe and the Tuna Whopper. The Atlantic is open for lunch and dinner.

Tsao Yang – This restaurant serves sophisticated Chinese cuisine for lunch and dinner. The design follows feng shui principles: circular room shape, the direct view of the water, aquarium with red fish. White-and-cream flooring and faux white-ostrich-leather seating contrast with red Asian lanterns, pillows, and china. Guests can observe the preparation of Cantonese, Szechwan, and Peking dinner specialties in the exhibition kitchen. The Peking duck is carved tableside. Tsao Yang also offers a light lunch menu, set six-course dinner menus, and a wide selection of Chinese teas.

Atlantic Lobby Bar – The original fireplace and a portrait of King Wilhelm II dominate the lobby bar. Decor combines classical and Art Deco features, such as marble-and-wood bar, red-and-black-leather armchairs, and black-marble columns. A model of a sailing ship stands on the mantel. Specialty coffees and fresh pastries are served during the day. In the evening, guests can relax with cocktails and live piano music. A courtyard with fountain and teak furniture is open for drinks and snacks in the summer.

Alstersalon – This spacious, high-ceilinged restaurant serves an American breakfast buffet, including hot and cold dishes, fish, meat, and eggs. Large windows frame views of the Alster River. The popular Alster Sunday Brunch features live piano music and a glass of sparkling wine.
