Konstanz

For the uninitiated, Konstanz is a university town that is situated in the southwest corner of Germany. It is located close to the Swiss border on the stretch of the Rhine between the Untersee and the Obersee. Apart for being famous for its university and lake, this town also boasts of a weather station and two limnological institutes. It is also Radio Bodensee’s headquarters. There are quite a number of tourist attractions in this city and one of the most popular of them is the Cathedral of Constance. According to records, the alemannic diocese of Constance was established over here in 590.

Lovers of the Gothic style of art must make it a point to see this cathedral. Tourists visiting this city are strongly recommended to check out the picturesque island of Mainau, which lies in Lake Constance.

This island, which is a major tourist attraction, has been included as a part of the city since 1971. While visiting this island, do not miss out the greenhouse that boasts of a tropical climate and has thousands of butterflies. The university sailing club is also located here. After completing this island, it is time to move on to another one.

Check out the Reichenau Island, which lies between the Untersee and the Gnadensee. This island has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site in the year 2000 due to its monastery, dedicated to the Virgin and St. Mark.

There are two additional churches in this island. If you are interested in spas, then you should check out the thermal spring that was founded in 1975. It lies just 1.5 kilometers from the Peterhausen district of the city.

If you want to know more about the base of the German Railroad fleet of ships, then it is time you visited the Harbor. Built between the years 1839-1842, it also serves as the base of some private shipping companies.

Konstanz also boasts of numerous other tourist attractions including the Hohenzollernhaus, the Hushaus, and the Rhine Gate Tower etc.
