This is one of the most known attractions of the city. Originally constructed by the famous architect Franz Schwechten between the years 1891 to 1895, this church serves as a memorial to Wilhelm I. Located in Breitscheidplatz, this iconic building suffered slight damages due to a bombing raid in the year 1943.

There were several plans to reconstruct the church after the end of the war, but after several discussions, it was decided to leave the structure as it was, to serve as a memorial of the war, and build another new church around it.

The famous architect, Egon Eiermann, was commissioned for the construction of the new structure. The consecration of the new church took place in the year 1962. You should check out the worship room and the hexagonal tower.

Check out the cross… it is made out of nails that have been taken from the old Coventry cathedral. Those in the know will tell you that a 1/10 scaled down model of the church can be viewed in Wernigerode town.

Paul Wallot designed and built this building, which is in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The construction of this building, which begun in the year 1884, took ten years to complete. Check out for the bronze letters that state `Dem Deutschen Volke.’ The metals they were cast from were sourced from seized French cannons.

Berlin, Reichtag building

This building suffered damages on a number of occasions. Once when a fire ravaged it and once during the end of the Second World War. The structure, as it stands today, is a renovation of the original, with the design being undertaken by Norman Foster. The glass dome atop the plenary hall is one of the most popular and recognized landmarks of Berlin city.

If you are so inclined, take the elevator to the roof and then making use of a spiral walkway, walk all the way to the top of the dome, and have a view of the city from there.

Also known as the church of St. Nicholas, it became a Lutheran church in the year 1539. Few tourists are aware of the fact that the famous hymn writer of the seventeenth century was the minister of this church. At around the same period, its musical director was the famous composer, Johann Crueger.

The zone around the church is popularly known as Nicholas quarter, or Nikolaiveiertel. Muhlendamm, the River Spree, Rathausstrasse, and Spandauer Strasse encompass it. The entire zone around this church consists of medieval buildings that have been restored. In a number of cases, one can also come across recent imitations.

The church as it stands today is a reconstruction of the original that was ravaged by a fire during the second world war. This church also serves as a museum plus a venue for occasional concerts. Do not miss out the 41 sets of bells that it is equipped with.

Famous for housing several medieval frescoes including The Dance of Death, Marienkirche is one of Berlin’s oldest churches. Also known as St. Mary’s Church, the construction of this Protestant church, dates back to the late thirteenth century.

This building was damaged badly during the course of the Second World War and was later on restored in the year 1950. Lovers of art will find pleasure in viewing a huge collection of artworks, many of them from other churches damaged during the war. They include `The Crucifixation,’ the bronze Baptismal font dating back to 1437, and the carved wooden retable, dating back to 1510.

Berlin Marienkirche

The Dance of Death fresco can be seen the moment visitors step in the entrance hall. This fresco was discovered during the year 1860 and at that time, it was in a very poor condition.

Funds are being raised to restore it back to its full glory and if you so want, you too can become a part of the restoration process by donating a token amount of 2.50 Euros. This will permit you to include a colored mosaic tile to a model of the original fresco. The nave of this church has a central pulpit, two side aisles, and vaulted ceilings.
This huge north Italian high Renaissance building boasts of three inner courtyards and has a tower that is 74 meters tall. The architecture of the tower will remind visitors about France’s Notre-Dame le Laon cathedral tower.

The reality is that it was modeled on the design of the old town hall of Torun, Poland. This building, which was badly damaged during the Second World War was rebuilt according to its original plans between the years 1951-1956.

The foundation stone of the Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus), where the first meeting of the town council was held towards the end of 1865, was laid in June, 1861. Those knowledgeable enough know that this building acquired its name because of the red colored clinker bricks that was used for constructing it.

Berlin, Rotes Rathaus

However, some individuals are of the opinion that the name was derived due to the due to the democratic spirit displayed by the municipal authorities. An entire city block is currently occupied by this building.

However, you might be tight pressed to make a particular choice since Berlin, the capital of Germany, boasts of no less than sixty Christmas markets where you can go along with your family and indulge in both fun and shopping.

One of the main of such markets is held right before the Charlottenburg Palace. It is recommended that you should mould your heart to that of a child. It is only then that you will be able to enjoy the fun of themed rides and exhibits, with the historical carriage rides being the most popular.

Christmas market, Berlin Gendarmenmarkt

However, do not spend all your time in front of the palace since there are some other famous markets to visit too with one of the most popular ones being WeihnachtsZauber on Gendarmenmarkt. For the uninitiated, the Gendarmenmarkt is one of Europe’s most beautiful square. Be prepared to turn into a child as you view the fairy lights and view the innumerous stalls full of souvenirs and other treats.

If you would love to combine some serious shopping along with the festivities plus some nightlife too, then you should view the Gedächtniskirche Christmas market. You can locate this market at the start of the Kurfurstendamm, West Berlin’s famous thoroughfare that is lined with restaurants, shops, and nightclubs.

One cannot but miss the huge white dome surrounded by four small domes on its corners when visiting Berlin via flight. They belong to the famous Berlin Cathedral, famous amongst tourists for its impressive Baroque structure.

However, hold your breath, since the present structure dates back just to 1905. Several other structures used to stand on the same spot where this structure now stands. If one checks out the history of this place, they will discover that this space was first occupied St. Erasmus Chapel whose status was enhanced to that of a collegiate church in the year 1465.

Berlin Cathedral

This status was later on, in the year 1536, transferred to the former Dominican church that lay to the south. When the elector, accepted the reformation in the year 1539, the collegiate church became a Lutheran church. Tourists might find it interesting to know that the Lutheran church was declared as the highest of all parish churches in the locality.

According to history, the church was converted to a court and parish church in the year 1613. Those who are interested in an excellent glimpse of the dome are recommended to view it from the gallery of the dome. It is really worth climbing the 270 steps to the top of the cathedral.

Do not miss out the crypt that contains more than eighty sarcophagi of Prussian royals.

What you see today is the restoration of a beautiful piece of art that was shattered during the Second World War. Situated to the north of the Old Museum, the New Museum, whose plans were drafted by Friedrich August Stuler, was built between the years 1843 and 1855. It was initially opened for public view in the year 1859. David Chipperfield, the famous English architect, was roped in for the restoration work of the same. Thrown open for visitors on October 2009, the New Museum provides viewers a rare glimpse into ancient history. Even though the building was ravaged during the war, most of its exhibits survived the bombing and they are put up for view now.

Berlin Neues Museum

It is rumored that the restoration and rebuilding of this museum is one of the most significant of such projects in Europe. The current building consists of five floors including the basement. The old structure was constructed in the neo-Classical style. Arguably, it was one of the most ambitious projects of its era with the then latest technologies like steam engines being used for its construction.

Do not forget to keep a date with the Egyptian beauty when you do visit the New Museum. Amongst its myriad of Egyptian exhibits like the papyrus collections, it also boasts of the bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. (photo: Marku1988)

Check out its entrance hall in the evening when the lights are on… they look so dreamlike with statues lining the sides of the walls. Completed in the year 1904, the Bode Museum, which was designed by Ernst von Ihne is amongst a group of museums that make up the Museum Island (Museumsinsel)in Berlin. It lies at the northern end of the island and is locally known as Bodemuseum.

Although the museum was originally named after Emperor Fredrick III, its name was later changed on in the year 1956 to reflect the name of its initial curator, Wilhelm von Bode, who looked after its collection from the year 1872 to 1929. He was also responsible in enlarging and developing the museum in the capacity of a director of the Berlin museums in the years 1906 to 1920.

The construction of the building began in the year 1897 and it is a classic example of the Neo-Baroque school of architecture. Visitors are recommended to check out the bronze cast of the statue of Schluter. One should also not miss viewing the great dome over the stairwell. This is also the perfect opportunity to check out the intricate staircase. This museum is famous for its exhibits of sculptures like the Dancer by Antonio Canova, Adam and Eve by Kren, and A Fountain by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Take a break from traveling all around and visit the place that was built for royalty. The term `bellevue’ means `magnificent view’ and the usage of this term for describing the Bellevue Palace is not exaggerated. Situated near the Spree River in Berlin and occupying an area of 50 acres, the Bellevue Palace was constructed in the year 1768 for prince August Ferdinand of Prussia. During those days, it served as the summer residence of the prince.

The famous architect, Philipp Daniel Boumann designed this magnificent white structure that boasts of the rare distinction of being the initial neo-classical structure that was constructed in Germany.

This two-storied structure has an elaborate design and has a central pediment that is supported by ornate Corinthian columns. Look up and check out the gables. They feature sandstone figurines that depict hunting, fishing, and agriculture. Compared to this the two wings, `the spree wing’ and `the ladies wing,’ are lackluster.

The magnificent ballroom was designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans and completed in 1791. If you have had the opportunity to go back into the past, you could have been witness to the magnificent parties that were held over here.

A major portion of the building was ravaged during the second world war and what remains today is but a reconstruction of the original street frontage along with its entrance, towers and domes plus a few rooms behind them. Those who are familiar with history will recall that the defense forces seized this synagogue and used it for storage purposes.

The richly ornamented front part of the building is made out of terracotta and shaped bricks, that are complemented by glazed colored bricks. Do not miss out on the main dome of the synagogue or the two smaller domes on the side wings of the building. Venture beyond the façade and close your eyes. It was at this spot where the main hall with a seating capacity of 3,000 used to be. At present, the building serves as the Jewish community’s only conservative synagogue. Visitors should also check out the museum that lies within this building. (photo: Andreas Praefcke)

Take a look at the live-sized structures inside this gigantic museum. Few lovers of arts are aware of the fact that when Germany was divided in the aftermath of the second world war, its art treasures were divided too. Located on Museum Island (Museumsinsel), Berlin, the Pergamon Museum was designed by Ludwig Hoffmann and Alfred Messel.

It took twenty years beginning from 1910 to complete this massive structure that showcases life-sized restructured monumental buildings like the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Pergamon Altar. Visitors will be amazed to learn that the parts of these structures have been transported from Turkey.

Berlin Pergamon Museum, Museum Island

The main museum is sub divided into several sections like the Middle East museum, the section for antiquity collection, the museum of Islamic art etc. All these put together make Pergamon Museum on of the most sought after by tourists and locals alike with more than 900,000 visiting it on an annual basis.

Do not miss out on some of its famous displays like the Mshatta façade, the Pergamon Altar, the Processional Way, the Ishtar Gate, and the Market Gate of Miletus. The Pergamon Altar, after which the museum got its name, dates back to the second century BC and consists of a 113 meters high sculptural frieze that depicts the struggle between the giants and the gods.

Though it had been planned for many years starting from the year 1815, the actual establishing of this museum took place in the year 1861, helped by the donations of 262 German and foreign paintings that were donated to the museum by Johann Heinrich Wagener.

The sheer shape of the building, which is shaped like a Roman Temple will awe visitors. Visitors to this museum can find works of famous artists like Karl Blechen, Karl Friedrish Schinkel, Claude Mones, Edouard Monet, and Casper David Friedrich, amongst others. Tourists should not miss out on the double statue of Friedericke of Prussia and princess Louise.

Known locally as the Fernsehturm, the Berlin TV Tower is one of the most popular amongst other tourist spots.

Situated in the center of the city, this tower was built between 1965 and 1969. Standing 368 meters tall, it is easily the tallest structure in the city and can be easily viewed from all parts of the city as well as from the suburbs. Few people are aware of the fact that the original height of the tower was 365 meters and the extra height was gained in the 1990s after the installation of a new antenna.

Berlin TV tower

Tourists should not miss out visiting the visitor platform that is located at a height of approximately 204 meters above ground level. From here they can view the city and beyond, especially during a clear day, when the visibility can easily reach a distance of 42 kilometers.

The famous restaurant that rotates once every 30 minutes lies a bit above the visitor platform. Tourists can access the same via two elevators that covers the distance in just 40 seconds. The brave of heart can opt in for climbing up the 986 steps of the steel stairway.

The German Democratic Republic (GDR) had begun construction of this wall from the 13 August 1961. It consisted of huge concrete wall, interspersed with watchtowers, which separated the two countries. The wall was constructed to prevent citizens of East Germany from venturing into West Germany and vice versa.

If the walls could talk, they would tell a tale about the thousands of brave souls who died in an attempt to cross it. Though a significant amount the wall was ground up while it was being demolished, pieces of the same can be found with private collectors and in museums and the lobbies of hotels.

Berlin wall, Eastside Gallery

Those who have not seen the wall while it still stood might check out a replica of the same that has been built by a private museum. This 20 meters long replica is located close to Checkpoint Charlie. However, it has not been built on the same location as that of the original wall. Try your luck and see if you can purchase a piece of the original wall from any antique store.
